Biden and Trump Debate
In the lead-up to the first presidential debate, the U.S. Israel Education Association (USIEA) is outlining our expectations for both candidates.
Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East and one of our key global partners, faces existential threats from terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as the existential threat posed by Iran. In light of these threats, we would like to see both President Biden and President Trump commit to the following policies during the debate:
1) Unwavering Support for Israel:
-
For the greater good of our country, it is in both candidates’ best interests to unequivocally support Israel in its fight against Hamas, Hezbollah, and any other terrorist organization that threatens its security and sovereignty.
-
This also means that support for Israel should not be contingent on who holds the Prime Minister’s seat.
-
The United States' commitment to Israel's security and sovereignty must remain steadfast regardless of its internal political dynamics.
2) Advocacy on the Global Stage:
-
President Biden and President Trump are encouraged to act as staunch advocates for Israel on the global stage.
-
This includes defending Israel in international forums, countering efforts to delegitimize the Jewish state, and ensuring that Israel's right to self-defense is recognized and respected.
3) Ensuring Global and Regional Support:
-
Both candidates are encouraged to work diligently to ensure other countries, particularly allies in Europe and the Middle East, stand with Israel.
-
This involves fostering stronger diplomatic ties and encouraging a unified front against terrorism.
4) Plans to Deal with Iran:
-
Both candidates need to articulate plans to address the larger looming threat posed by Iran.
-
This includes preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and countering its malign activities in the region that threaten both Israel and broader regional stability.
5) Attention to the Abraham Accords and Arab Partner Coalition:
-
To ensure regional peace and cooperation, the Abraham Accords should be enhanced, strengthening the coalition of Arab partners who have normalized relations with Israel.
USIEA believes that a strong and secure Israel is vital to the interests of the United States and the stability of the Middle East. We look forward to hearing from both candidates on how they plan to uphold these critical principles.
