Statement by Heather Johnston on Iran MOU

The United States has no closer or more reliable ally than Israel. That relationship has served American interests for decades, and it should be strengthened – not strained – by American diplomacy with Iran.

USIEA is reviewing the newly released memorandum of understanding with Iran and recent public remarks by senior administration officials. Iran’s long record of supporting terrorism and threatening Israel gives Americans ample reason to assess this agreement carefully and skeptically.

​

The Abraham Accords demonstrated what becomes possible when the United States stands firmly with Israel and its Arab neighbors work together toward a shared vision of stability. Those gains are worth protecting. Any diplomacy with Iran should be measured against whether it advances or undermines that progress.

Strong alliances are built on mutual respect. Public remarks that disparage a close ally or dismiss its legitimate security concerns do not serve American interests. The United States can pursue its own diplomatic objectives while treating Israel as the valued partner it is.

USIEA will continue reviewing this agreement as additional details emerge and will keep our members informed. We will also continue working with American leaders to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship remains at the center of American policy and that our most reliable ally receives the respect it deserves, in both words and action.
